Potential candidates for PhD and MPhil research with Professor Lubaina Himid are welcome to submit research proposals for projects located under these broad headings.
Your project will address issues of identity, representation, globalisation and contemporary visual art practice. It might seek to investigate new ways of addressing the production of artworks and should map the history, methods and critical context for this work.
You will, in order to pursue certain lines of enquiry, be expected to have some understanding of the breadth and complexity of work made by artists of the black diaspora during the past 60 years.
You will be based within The Research Centre for Contemporary Visual Culture as part of the Making Histories Visible Project team. Your project could be practice led and have historical, contextual and practical outcomes.
In addition to writing the dissertation element your project could also have other outcomes such as
Production of new artworks for public exhibition/intervention
Web based inter-active artworks
Curated exhibition of artworks by practicing artists

Zoe Whitley
Zoe Whitley holds dual roles of Curator Contemporary British Art at Tate Britain and Curator , International Art at Tate Modern
Before beginning her PhD in 2013 at the University of Central Lancashire Zoe was a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where she began her career in 2003, following an MA in the History of Design from the Royal College of Art and a BA (High Honors) from Swarthmore. Artist-led and object-enthused, this site is a record of select past and present projects and a few research preoccupations.
Zoe Whitley’s Curating the Black Diaspora PhD project is called The “I” in Institution: the artist and curating racial difference in contemporary art museums.

Simonetta Moro PhD in Fine Art
Simonetta Moro - The Panorama Prjoect - The Hatton Gallery
Simonetta Moro studied art in Venice and Bologna (Diploma in Painting, Accademia di Belle Arti). Subsequently she has been living and working in various places in Italy, England, Spain and Germany (co-founder of the printmaking workshop “Atelier il Moro”, Bad Kreuznach).
MA European Fine Art, Winchester School of Art, 1996; Fulbright Fellowship in Visual Arts, American Academy in Rome, 1999-2000;
PhD in Fine Art, studio and theory based, University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK, 2003. Her Ph.D. research culminated in the “Reconstructing Babel” project, a site-specific installation at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston, 2002, and in the written thesis: Re-constructing Babel: The History and Creative Possibilities of a Myth Explored Through Text and Installation.
Residencies include the International Summer Academy in Salzburg, Yaddo and Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. In her work she explores a wide range of media, from painting to drawing to printmaking to 3D installations. Teaching is an important part of her creative activity. Simonetta Moro is currently Assistant Professor in Fine Arts, Faculty of Arts in Context at Eugene Lang College, New York City.
